War and Peace War and Peace is arguable the most important book written in modern era. Tolstoy's grasp of human need, interaction, character development and the beauty of his descriptive passages is unmatched. How one man can accurately describe the inner thoughts of so many diverse characters is almost incomprehensible. Going war-crimes on the French feels a bit out of character for him, but who knows. I finally realized that I completely hold Andrey to a different standard than every other character in this book. I don’t know why that is, but I just can’t seem to give him a fair shake.

Book II. Nikolay Rostov and Prince Andrey undergo their first war experience at the battle of Schöngraben. They each discover the ineffectuality of the individual in a mass situation. Nikolay accepts being a"cog in a machine" and Andrey rejects being part of the administering forces, choosing, instead, to fight at the front. Book III. In this volume, War, Peace and Organizational Ethics, expert contributors draw upon philosophers such as Aristotle, Alasdair MacIntyre, and Emmanuel Levinas in order to explore how the ethics of war and peace resonate with organizational ethics.

O VER THE past 15 years Yiyun Li, a Chinese-American author, has read “War and Peace” at least a dozen times. Her hardback copy of Leo Tolstoy’s 1,page saga bristles with coloured notes. Have humans always waged war? Is warring an ancient evolutionary adaptation or a relatively recent behavior—and what does that tell us about human nature? In War, Peace, and Human Nature, editor Douglas P. Fry brings together leading experts in evolutionary biology, archaeology, anthropology, and primatology to answer fundamental questions about peace, conflict, and human nature in an 5/5(1).

The Long War is a name proposed by Philip Bobbitt in The Shield of Achilles: War, Peace, and the Course of History to describe the series of major conflicts fought from the start of the First World War in to the decline of the Soviet Union in With any classic book, but especially a book the length of Tolstoy’s epic War and Peace, it’s War to be intimidated and avoid reading ’s no need to avoid War and Peace for that reason.

Just a few chapters in, you will be pulled in and find yourself racing through it like a thriller bought for light reading at the airport. I read War and Peace on the beach, age I just read war and peace and I just wanted to say a little thing: this book, although written years ago, it's alive: the characters, the ambience, the world, everything is perfectly natural, fresh and genuine, Tolstoj has an unnatural talent for writing, but for me that wasn't the main reason I greatly enjoyed this elephant of a book, simply the authenticity of everything made 's.

1. It's a mirror of our time. At its core War and Peace is a book about people trying to find their footing in a world being turned upside down by war, social and political change, and spiritual confusion. The existential angst of Tolstoy and his characters is entirely familiar to those of us living at the beginning of the twenty-first century, and his novel has important things to say to us.

He lives in Boston, Massachusetts. The future of war-peace may be two sides of the same coin, but framing matters in terms of mindset and proactiveness. A large-scale mapping exercise based on engaging peace oriented groups could lead to a consensus on, and momentum for, a focused and consolidated effort to de-escalate an emerging conflict.

But whatever we call it, War and Peace is an astonishing work—a book that incorporates historical characters, vivid battle scenes, several love stories, shrewd glimpses of everyday life, an examination of Western ideas and the Russian soul, and a disquisition on the nature of history itself, among other things.

It is at once a book of ideas. Read and discuss War and Peace with Yiyun Li and A Public Space. Starting Ma join us for a free virtual book club—a moment each day when we can gather together as a community. #TolstoyTogether.
